Whether you have been practicing martial arts for years, or you are just curious about ancient combat wisdom, you can find something fascinating in the animal styles. These aren’t just fighting techniques – they are ways to train your body and mind to tap into your warrior energy.

Let’s dive in and see what qualities the animals have to share.

Tiger: Power and Ferocity Unleashed

The tiger doesn’t just fight – it dominates the room. Tiger’s gift is “Strength of Bone”. This style is all about raw strength, aggression, and unyielding force. Tiger uses short, powerful, claw-like strikes combined with direct kicks and hits and assertive, linear motion. Training in Tiger toughens your body, remodeling your bones and ligaments to withstand impact.

Tiger can clear a room without thinking twice, but it’s not just physical. Tiger teaches you to embrace challenges head-on, increasing your mental toughness. The tiger is fearless and commanding…the powerhouse of Chun Kuo. Tiger can show you how to steamroll over the challenges life throws at you.

Dragon: Spirit and Strategy

If the tiger is a wrecking ball, the dragon is a tactician. Dragon’s gift is “Spirit of the Warrior”.

Dragon style is about blending fluid movement with fierce intensity. Think sweeping strikes and whirling leg motions, guarding your territory to move the opponent around you. Dragon encourages you to push deeper into the integration of body and mind – directing anger while standing your ground.

*ELEMENT– EARTH

Snake: Energy and Flow

Snake style emphasizes focus, agility, precision, and control. The gift of Snake is “Qi”, learning how to use internal energy over brute strength. Snake techniques are fluid, winding and coiling around the opponent and knowing when and where to strike.

Snake training teaches you to harness energy efficiently so you can remain calm and calculating in the face of chaos. The snake reminds us that sometimes the quietest approach can be the deadliest.

*ELEMENT– WATER

Crane: Balance and Elegance

The crane embodies the marriage of strength and art in a style that features circular motions, deflecting attacks, and using the opponent’s energy against them. Crane’s gift is “balance”.

Kicks and avoidance are features of Crane style, as is maintaining a calm, graceful demeanor. Training in Crane emphasizes physical and mental balance, teaching you to find strength in stillness and power in subtlety. Crane is able to make retreat look like weakness, when actually you are just waiting for an opening to drive your point home.

*ELEMENT– WOOD

Leopard: Speed and Precision

If you are all about lightning-fast moves, Leopard is your spirit animal. Leopard’s gift is “Speed”, and Leopard style arrives with quick, agile strikes and sharp reflexes when it explodes on the scene. Leopard style relies on speed and accuracy, delivering rapid, powerful attacks designed to overwhelm an opponent before they can react.

Leopard training emphasizes building explosive power and refining your reflexes. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to channel the inner ninja and leave their opponent wondering what hit them.

*ELEMENT– METAL

Why Train Like An Animal?

The Five Animal concept is based on an ancient Chinese philosophy called Wuxing or “Five Movements”. Originally this philosophy was intended to explain interactions and relationships in the natural world. It came to maturity during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE). It was also during this time it became known in Chinese medicine as Five Elements.

Southern Five Animal styles were developed during times of war. Other systems can have 10 or more animal styles, with intricacy of technique developed during peaceful times.

Fighters and philosophers in ancient times knew there were many skills that could be learned from observing the natural world.

The practice of martial arts, including fighting styles from many different traditions, evolved into a way to train the body, sharpen the mind, and embrace a warrior’s spirit.

Wuxing invites you to explore the subtle energies of our world and learn their real-life applications.

The New Year is a great time to begin practicing the art of Chun Kuo Kung Fu! Some schools offer both in-person and online training group classes. Schools like Seattle Asian Medicine and Martial Arts offer one-on-one training in addition to scheduled group classes. Individual guidance is a great way to start, especially if you are new to martial arts. For instructors in your area, it is important to consider their reviews as well as the convenience of location, class schedules, and costs.
