A noticeable difference between the landscapes of traditional Eastern art and Western art is the prevalence of empty space. The backgrounds of Eastern art do not fill every square inch with objects or color. Instead, what you cannot see is just as important as what you can. Space itself is used to complete the whole picture.

If you have ever studied art and optical illusions, the brain has a tendency to join together forms that are not connected...to fill in what is perceived as a "missing piece" with its own imaginings. Later, the memory gives feedback of the image, but with the supplemental pieces added by the subjective mind.

This you will remember as the truth.

Self-Discovery Through Martial Arts

Martial arts, much like traditional Eastern art, emphasizes the importance of space—both physical and mental. The practice often begins with a focus on external techniques, but as one progresses, the journey shifts inward. This transition mirrors the empty spaces in Eastern art, where the unfilled areas invite contemplation and reflection. In training, practitioners learn to embrace silence and stillness, allowing them to discover their internal landscapes. The empty spaces within themselves become as significant as the techniques they master.

Transformation Through Tai Chi Practice

Tai Chi, a form of martial arts known for its slow, flowing movements, embodies the principle of using space to foster transformation. Each movement is deliberate, allowing the practitioner to connect with their breath and body. This connection can create a meditative state where thoughts can settle, much like the empty spaces in Eastern art encourage the viewer to pause and reflect. As one practices Tai Chi, they learn to let go of tension and mental clutter, ultimately revealing a deeper sense of self. The transformation that occurs through this practice is akin to the way negative space enhances the overall composition of a piece of art, highlighting the beauty of simplicity and presence.

The Interplay of Space and Self

Both practices teach that true mastery lies not in filling every moment with action but in understanding the balance between movement and stillness. This balance allows for self-discovery, where practitioners can explore their potential, confront their limitations, and ultimately transform into a more harmonious version of themselves. Just as the viewer of Eastern art learns to appreciate the significance of what is left unsaid, martial artists learn to value the quiet moments of introspection that lead to profound personal growth. In this way, the journey of self-discovery through martial arts becomes a canvas, where the spaces between actions and thoughts play a crucial role in shaping one's identity.

Why are we sharing these thoughts today? At the Society, we are committed to fostering ideas and practices that empower everyone to work towards the life they desire and become the individuals they aspire to be. Recognizing your truth is a crucial aspect of this journey, and both martial arts and tai chi are vital in achieving this insight.

Beginning a martial arts practice such as Kung Fu or Tai Chi doesn't need to be difficult. Some martial arts schools provide both in-person and online classes. Schools like Seattle Asian Medicine and Martial Arts offer personalized training in addition to scheduled group sessions. Individual guidance is an excellent way to begin, especially if you are new to martial arts. When looking for instructors in your area, it's important to consider their reviews, as well as the convenience of location, class schedules, and costs.
